Anxiety Answers & Help

Answers to all your questions about anxiety and panic attacks

I've been wanting to join the marines for quite a while now but keep hesitating because of my social anxiety disorder which I am taking xanax for. I am also an alcoholic (mentally not physically addicted) so I know I would have to cut back drastically or just quit. Also, assuming they would let me join, do they have their own doctors that manage your prescriptions or do you still have to see your own doctor?

You can not join ANY branch of the military taking psychiatric meds, or any prescription meds really. To enlist in any branch, you have to be off psychiatric meds for at least 1 year before yoru even considered to be given a waiver. They give breathalizer tests at MEPS as well, so you have to stop drinking too. You need to manage your anxiety disorder before you even think about it. belive me, i had problems the first time i went to meps about a year and a half ago. I had self harmed in teh past and seen counselors. and yes, they denied me adn said to get my mind set and to come back when i was ready, and they would let me in on a waiver after a psych evaluation and thats what im doing now. bout 3 more weeks till i enlist and believe me, it would have been ALOT better to wait tll i was better liek i am now

Edit

Also, dont try to Hide ANYTHING from your recruiter. if your straight up honest with your recruiter, they will do their best to get you in. They dont like being lied to, and if you lie to them and say nothings wrong, then crack infront of the doctors in the 9+ hour physical, they are going to be very mhm upset with you. to put it nicely. haha.

Be honest. dont lie. tell your recruiter. he will probably tell you Stop taking them, wait a week, then take you to meps since the medications will be out of your system. Now my Marine recruiter told me to lie, say nothing was wrong with me. I didnt think that was safe though given my state of being at the time so i was honest. i didnt wnat to put my whole platoon in danger cuz of me.

Believe me, it works out in the end.

Edit 2= Sad to say, David p is lying. you are not allowed any medication ESPECIALLY psychiatric medication in the Army.

Edit again, lol. - You cant have any medications while in basic training. After however, if you "develop" this they might give you the medications, or discharge you.

His father passed away, and my dads body was tensed, his stomach hurt, his hands started to tingle and his chest tensed up, and it was hard for him to breathe, what is a treatment
we went tothe doctor and they gave him relaxation pills

Xanax and yoga. Also, you might want to see if grief counseling would be an option. That might not be his cup of tea, but keep it in mind.

Sorry about your loss.

And did it work for you?

no…however, i have social anxiety disorder, and after over a decade of trying different therapies and medications (including benzo's, such as xanax and klonopin) and antidepressants (such as prozac and paxil), i FINALLY found the type of medication that DOES work, and it doesn't stop working, so long as you take it as directed:

*stimulants*, such as Adderall, believe it or not!

just 43 minutes after my very first dose, i went from not being able to walk down my street, to being able to sing in front of a crowd of 500 - with NO problem…and, i still take the same exact low dose i started out with years ago: 10mg Adderall XR once daily (in the morning).

What kind of anxiety medicine works for anxiety? I was diagnost with anxiety and tomorrow i go to my doctor to get medicine for it. I always have racing thoughts, I always worry, I am very irretable and I stay tired all of the time.

That's the worst s h i t you can ever take. Anxiety is normal, everyone has it. It's how you deal with it that matters. No medication is going to teach you how to deal with life, overcome fears, deal with worries, stress, etc. Even depression can be a factor with anxiety, and often it's because of the way we think that ends up in a cycle of depression. How we think ends up in how we feel. It's the habit of thought process that ends up in the negative emotions. How you learn to deal with your thinking, your outlook, your attitude (positive or negative), your level of faith, confidence, etc. I would far more recommend counseling than medication (even group therapy). Also, relaxation exercises, physical exercise, yoga, spirituality, relaxing music, taking time out, play time, etc. Anxiety medications especially the ones in the family of valium, Xanax, Librium, Attivan, etc are all from the same chemical structure. Once you get it on them, they actually cause a syndrome of anxiety that can increase 10 fold. You've heard of housewives that become addicted and end up having psychotic or mental breakdowns. It's a nasty rebound affect, the medication that was suppose to help in the end is the disease. That kind of stuff is only good for VERY short term. Never stay on it for long term, look for other answers I’m not a big believer in alcohol. But honestly, you would be BETTER off taking a glass of wine 2-3 times a day than taking a valium 2-3 times a day to relax a little. I wouldn’t recommend the wine necessarily either, but it's a better option than anxiety medication. By the way I was on it from age 16-21 and I ended up with an anxiety disorder and ended up spending 21 days in the hospital to get off the stuff and get my mind back. It took a long time before I ever felt normal again. My boss’s son is in his 30's and he's a MESS from Xanax, so is his wife. They wonder why they can’t overcome their anxiety disorder. The mother started it because of travel anxiety. She recommended her son for mild anxiety attacks he would have. Now their both 10 times worse off being on that crap. They don't realize the medication is what's crippling them. Millions are going through the same thing right now on the same stuff!

A few years ago I went in for testing due to chronic chest pain. Through a series of tests it was discovered that nothing was physically wrong but that I was just experiencing stress.

Since that time I have continued to have chest pain. Naturally, it is worse at higher stress times.

My Guy has suggested that perhaps I suffer from anxiety. I asked my mom about what she thought and she told me the same, that she felt I experience a lot of anxiety.

The thing is, on the outside I’m usually okay - no real physical symptoms besides the chest pain and maybe some nausea or headaches. I do feel stressed out a lot, that I can’t get done what I need to get done for my university classes but is there really anything I can do about it?

If I do indeed suffer from anxiety, it is probably mild most of the time and severe only occasionally (a couple times a month I am thinking). Is it worth it to go back to my doctor and discuss it with him?

If we chose to treat it by medication, what sort would he put me on? The people I know with anxiety are on everything from Paxil (an antidepressant) to Xanax (a narcotic relaxant)

Looking for some detailed feedback from personal knowledge and experiences - not a quick yes or no answer. Thank you!

*NOTE* If your advice is not to go back to the doctor, what can I do to alleviate my chest pain?

Chest pain, under any circumstances, should be assessed by a physician to ensure there isn’t a cardiac problem. Because you “didn’t then” doesn’t mean that you “don’t now”.

An anti-anxiety may indeed help you, and there is no shame in taking something that will help you physically deal with stress. You body is telling you that you are stressed, and it’s chemistry will reflect that. Long term stress and anxiety can lead to very real health problems, so there is nothing wrong with taking something NOW to help you. Each doctor is different, and each person is different, so there is no way of knowing what the doc will put you on, without knowing your whole medical history. It may be something short acting like Ativan, or they may want you on an antidepressant or similar. Don’t be surprised if you have to try different drugs before you get relief - this is common. You may hit the nail on the head the first time - most antianxieties are fairly effective and you may only need them “as needed”.

Consider therapy, a life coach, or similar to assist you in dealing with your stress. Is there something in your life that you need to talk out? That you need help in dealing with? This is normal, and again, there is no shame in seeking a professional to help you cope with your stress, and helping you adapt some healing techniques to help you cope with stress and your stressors.

Consider meditiation, yoga, or spiritual things. These may seem very spooky and new age, but yoga and meditation can help ease your body from stress through learning relaxation and breathing techniques. They also help you become more aware of your body, which may help you learn your early physical signs that you are feeling stressed, so that you may better deal with them before they escalate to chest pain.

As you’ve learned, stress is very real, and can have real health effects or physical symptoms. Don’t ignore it even if you feel fine most of the time.. it’s something that deseves attention. Good luck!

Does Paxil Prozac Zoloft or Xanax help aid in weight loss/ appetite suppression?

I'm going to the doctor and am getting an antidepressant with anti anxiety and I'm afraid to take one that will make me eat tons. I've been on lexapro and effexor and they were so so.

Tips?

Wellbutrin helps with compulsive behaviors such as eating and smoking. It has been marketed as Zyban before to help people quit smoiking.

ive had anxiety for quite for some time now but i never got treatment for it because ive been in navy bootcamp so i havent had time to get cheaked out
it gets bad some time where i have to stop because im breathing too hard

ive had anxiety before i was in the navy so it just hasnt just started.

Contrary to what others are saying here the doc probably wont give you xanax right away, it is a highly addictive drug and is only used as a last resort.
Chances are he will put you on an antidepressant. No worries though, its usually a very low dose. After about a month you will come in for a follow up and if the anti depressants didnt work then they will give you a drug like xanax!
