Anxiety Answers & Help

Answers to all your questions about anxiety and panic attacks

It seems like Social Anxiety is a fairly new disorder. What has it made it so prominent in the past couple decades?

One viewpoint is that it hasn't increased. People are just more in touch with their emotions nowadays–which has caused more awareness of it and that awareness can actually enhance the symptoms of SA.

I don't think thats completely true. I agree that people are more in touch with their emotions, but I'd still say there is an increase caused by something else.

Does anybody have any thoughts as to why you think SA has increased in the past years?

I appreciate it.

Research identified it as an issue and created criterion by which it can be identified. Treatment plans follow identification - medication and therapy.
It's the same with children and bipolar disorder or children with ADD/ADHD. Surely they existed prior to the diagnosable disorder.

Much of this is due to medical insurance billing. They need a name/diagnosis to bill.

My story

For the last 14 years i have not been able to interact with people, at school i avoided most of the classes and now i rarely leave the house because i hated seeing people and think people would judge me etc.
I didn't tell anyone about it as i was very ashamed of it, i am a women in her twenties i should be able to go to the local shop. But in the end i did go to the doctor and was diagnosed with SA.

I think people are more aware of it and are feeling less embarrassed by asking for help so hence why it is on the increase.

What is it that makes people get scared & fear of dieing when they are getting chest pains due to cause they suffer from Anxiety? why do chest pains make you feel this way?!

Your talking about Panic Attacks. A real panic attack makes you hyperventilate hence you get pains, feel like you can not breath, dizziness and pins & needles in your feet and hands, so the more you panic the worse it gets. Its call the Flight and Fear response, from the Cave Man days when it gave him the adrenaline to run from screaming beasts or whatever. I was convinced I was having a Stroke. I thought I’d been having them for about 7 years but then i had what I call a real one and it was bad. It’s feels very physical and is an chemical imbalance in your brain mainly caused by too much stress. Hence the anxiety tablet help sort out the chemical level.

What if it's not so much people you're afraid of, but rather the feelings of anxiety that cause you to act nervous. Consciously telling myself that I'm confident or using anecdotes like "what's the worse that can happen" doesn't seem to help since those feelings just keep occuring automatically no matter what I tell myself intellectually.

If only there was a simple answer.

try taking anxiety relieving stuff to reduce the anxiety then ease yourself into society. then you can at least think and realise its really nothing to be afraid of then slowly reduce anxiety pill intakes until you're comfortable and calm without them..

i don't think there's any true way other than practise.. don't fear making mistakes laugh at them, don't beat yourself down look on the brighter side. All things which are very much easier said than done but will have meaning if you at least practise.

Why do you think depression, anxiety and mental health problems have grown to be an epidemic? What do you think would help slow the progression of mental health problems? Do you think mental health problems are genitic, situational, environmental, or is it due to a chemical imbalance? When a person becomes depressed; do you think it is because our brain stops producing certain chemicals or does our brain produce a chemical that aggravates depression/anxiety? Why is it when we feel anxious, our bodies react in strange ways such as pounding heart, dizzyness, can’t breath, and intestinal problems?

Why do you think depression, anxiety and mental health problems have grown to be an epidemic? What do you think would help slow the progression of mental health problems? I think we just talk about them more than we used to. However, there are some social changes that may lead to anxiety; family structure isn't what it used to be, people feel more isolated, etc. Maybe having a stronger sense of family and being part of a group of people who care about you, people you can talk comfortably with about anything.

Do you think mental health problems are genitic, situational, environmental, or is it due to a chemical imbalance? It can be any of those; it's generally considered a "chemical imbalance", but that could be triggered by genetic, situational factors, physical disease or head injury, or any combination of these.

When a person becomes depressed; do you think it is because our brain stops producing certain chemicals or does our brain produce a chemical that aggravates depression/anxiety? At least some of the time, yes. More often the brain still produces them, but they break down too quickly before they do what they are supposed to do. No one is absolutely sure why that happens in some people and not others.

Why is it when we feel anxious, our bodies react in strange ways such as pounding heart, dizzyness, can't breath, and intestinal problems? The autonomic nervous system controls mood, anxiety, digestion, sex, etc. I think it's a kind of imbalance in the autonomic nervous system. It might have been there to help our prehistoric ancestors get away from an enemy or something but maybe the purpose of this isn't as practical in modern times. Kind of left over instincts for survival that are no longer applicable. (Just an idea.)

Wow….A haunting embarrassing moment. The thing about embarrassing moments, they’re always a bigger deal to the person they happen to. The person/people around when it happened probably don’t even remember it.
