I’ve been having a lot of pretty bad panic attacks recently, so much so that they last between about 1 and half and 3 hours, or so Im told I dont actually remember. I never really truely calm down, as I’m shaking so much I tend to just were myself out and fall asleep/unconscious? I’m really beginning to wonder if it happens again whether i should get my friend to call for a medic to calm me down with something. I’ve been to my GP and I have a refferal to the hospital in a week but if I have an attack before then do you think it would be wise to seek medical attention?
Sorry…
for those asking, im 20 and im not on any meds. Ive had mental health issues for a while, including self harm. My last attack i had I spent hours panicking and fighting with my friend as I was trying desperatly to hurt myself…
You definitely should see a phycyatrist about that. I used to get frequent panic attacks but I started seeing a doctor, got on meds, and I’m fine now.
If you have another panic attack, do not go to the ER right then. All they will do is have you talk to a social worker, put you through procedural tests, and tel you that there is nothing they can do.
Next time try calling your health care provider and they will be able to find an available doctor close to you. However, therapists and psychiatrists book months and years in advance, so don’t expect to find something too close
I feel your pain and sincerely hope you find help to get past this.

I know someone that is being treated for panic attacks associated w/ an anxiety disorder.
Currently, they have been taking Zolfot for about 8 years. However, I have known this person for about 3 years. I have found that over the past 3 years, this person has changed significantly.
All of the issue they are having, happen to be side effects of Zolfot. This includes weight gain, drowsiness, a general lack of energy and interest and (from what I've heard) a lack of sexual desire.
I suggested this person stop taking the medication, but they are scared the panic attacks might start again.
I don't blame them. However, is there anyway that a person can be treated w/ a different medication.
Also, is there anyway a person can receive treatment for anxiety disorders and panic attacks through working w/ a therapist?
Hi, sorry to hear your friend is getting panic attacks. If he/she want to eliminate panic attacks tell them to take the following steps.
1.Breathe properly. If you control your breathing, you control panic. As soon as you notice the signs of anxiety, check your breathing: breathe in slowly through your nose pushing your tummy out (to the count of 5 or so). Breathe out slowly and for a bit longer (to the count of 7 or so) through your mouth. Do not breathe rapidly or shallowly (in the chest area). This will soon restore the balance of oxygen and you will feel a lot better.
2. Try Cognitive Behavioural Therapy! CBT is proven to be the most effective thing for panic attacks and anxiety. It takes a bit of work, but it is super effective. (After 15 years of panic attacks, mine stopped completely). You can take a course for free online at: livinglifetothefull.com It has been funded by NHS Scotland and has had great results thus far.
3. Try relaxation exercise tapes (progressive muscular relaxation). They really help if you practise often enough. This site has instructions on how to do it without the tapes (and other useful info): http://www.cci.health.wa.gov.au/resource…
Best of luck to you both.

Okay my first question has to do with panic attacks. Anytime I drink like, a cappucino or an energy drink, I have a panic attack. Do I need to get treatment/medicine for this, or should I just let it go?
Second question. Sometimes I have this excessive excitement. Like I'll look at my friend count on myspace, and picture it going up and up in my mind and i'll put my fingers up by my mouth and twiddle them together and have an awkward breathing pattern. I also do this when I think about pulling a car into a driveway and the wheels turning and going up the bump, but it mostly happens with things with numbers, such as profile views, friend counts, text message counts, etc. I also do it when I play video games. I've been doing this 'excessive excitement' thing since I was like 4. I remember playing Mario Kart and doing it. I've never seen anyone else do it or have this kind of thing happen to them, and I'm wondering what it is.
well, i have an anxiety problem and i know that caffiene only triggers attacks, so stay away! you might want to find a therapist for that other part, im not sure…sorry im not more help. good luck.

I was severely bullied as a kid.
Form 5 - 12yrs of age i was the "target"…. fat, crooked teeth, frizzy hair, more developed, dumb..
Kids, mainly boys would call me names, spit on me, puch my boobs and push me down the stairs.
Things have changed now (15yrs old) and i have a few friends..
Lately i have been getting severe panic attacks..
Could being shy, isolated and bullied as a child have caused my anxiety issues.
The two could well be related and it wouldn't surprise me if they where. Having said that, I don't know what is happening in your life right now, for all I know there could be something else going on that could be causing/adding to it. Whatever the cause is I would advise you to go and seek help with this problem. Panic attacks are absolutely horrible to go through and in my experience problems like this will only get worse without treatment. Good luck!

I have been having constipation, with horrible nausea, panic attacks, stomach aches and fatigue. I am under a crap load of stress, 8 classes, 3-5 hours of homework a night and trying to hold a 4.0. Could Stress cause problems like this?
Gastrointestinal problems are often one of the first signs that a person is overstressed. Stress and anxiety can cause long term health problems, so it is important you try to relax. Your stomach problems could lead you to develop stress ulcers. But don’t worry too much! There are things you can do to relax.
Keep in mind that while school is a stressful thing now, it will be a thing of the past in the future. Make sure you have a good balance with school and find some time to do things you enjoy and take your mind off your studies.
Check out the reference site below. It has a lot of information on the health problems stress can cause, as well as a bunch of ways to help reduce your stress.
Good luck!

did it affect your delivery? Not only in the state of having your children early or late, but also did it make delivery difficult? I have been reading on it because I have generalized anxiety disorder and it says that anxiety causes preterm labor. I’m just curious how many of you it affected. Thank you!
I have generalized anxiety also and see a psychatrist for it and have for almost a year. I was pregnant from February and delivered at 37 weeks and 3 days on October 14th. It didn’t affect my pregnancy or my delivery at all. I had to be induced due to severe preclampsia.
During my pregnancy I just tried to avoid stressful situations that seemed to cause me anxiety like dealing with my father in law who is an awful person. I started getting panic attacks dealing with him and his wife so I stopped seeing them at all, to protect myself and my baby.
Also, delivery wasn’t really all the difficult for me. I was nervous and anxious about being induced but once things got under way I was on so much pain medication that I felt pretty decent all things considered!
If you ask your Ob you can also take some medications while you are pregnant to help control anxiety and/or depression. I was prescribed Zoloft during my pregnancy but chose not to take it and do therapy instead. But my OB said it was safe to take as long as I was off of it by 36 weeks (assuming I would go full term) so the baby had enough time to get the drug out of its system.
I think you should be just fine. Just try to relax as much as you can an avoid things and or people that make your anxiety worse.
Good luck!
P.S. Anxiety can make you more likely to suffer from post partum deprssion and post partum anxiety after you deliver so be sure to watch out for the signs of those and get help if you need it. I’ve been diagnosed with both and am taking anti depressants and doing therapy every other week and it’s helped me cope a lot better with all of the changes going on.
I have a panic disorder with agoraphobia that I have been dealing with for many years. I’ve lost my job, my home, and I can’t drive without having them, I am working on agoraphobic situation with cognative behavioral therapy and that is slowly working. I have read plenty about what to do when I have an attack and practice relaxation methods, but what I can’t find is when I can feel an attack coming on, what should I do? The relaxation methods don’t work. Example situations would range from when I go out with someone else driving to go to the bank or when I friend is coming over to visit. I am VERY anxious before these events, sometimes for days prior. I was hoping someone had some methods/advice to help me cope with this. I am happy with the rest of my treatment but I don’t know what to do about the fear of having a panic attack…
Thank you!
I am currently on Klonopin, but am working very hard to get off of it as it does not stop the attacks, I have been on it for about 2 years. I have tried well over a dozen anti-deppressents, each one for at least 2 months, some for years, they did not help, some even made it worse. So, drugs are not the answer for me. I have seen many doctors, and still do but this has been going on for many years, the CBT therapy is the only thing that seems to work.
So it seems that positive self talk is a good method? I have tried and continue to but I have not had much luck so far. Thanks for all the responses so far!
Okay i know exactly how you feel because i went thru that time in my life as well where i couldn’t go anywhere without that anxious feeling and getting panic attacks all of the time, at school at home my life was just a big panic attack. But then i started going to cognative therapy like you are but it took a lot of work and time. You really have to listen to what your therapist tells you to do because it will really work. You can’t stop a panic attack from happening but when it comes you can make it very short and they will keep getting shorter and shorter until they don’t come anymore. My therapist told me when i get the feeling like i’m getting one i feel like i am dreaming i say to myself its okay i am okay, i have gotten this feeling so many times before and nothing has ever happened to me. Then the panic feeling goes away. A panic attack is just you reacting to that feeling, if you don’t react it will go away. So try saying that you yourself when you are getting that feeling. You can do it, it takes work but i know you can. If i did it, so can you. Just listen to your therapist maybe right in a diary, tense and relax your muscles for 10 seconds each 10 times this will all get better it is just a phase. Fight those panics! :]
