Answers to all your questions about anxiety and panic attacks

I've been wanting to join the marines for quite a while now but keep hesitating because of my social anxiety disorder which I am taking xanax for. I am also an alcoholic (mentally not physically addicted) so I know I would have to cut back drastically or just quit. Also, assuming they would let me join, do they have their own doctors that manage your prescriptions or do you still have to see your own doctor?

You can not join ANY branch of the military taking psychiatric meds, or any prescription meds really. To enlist in any branch, you have to be off psychiatric meds for at least 1 year before yoru even considered to be given a waiver. They give breathalizer tests at MEPS as well, so you have to stop drinking too. You need to manage your anxiety disorder before you even think about it. belive me, i had problems the first time i went to meps about a year and a half ago. I had self harmed in teh past and seen counselors. and yes, they denied me adn said to get my mind set and to come back when i was ready, and they would let me in on a waiver after a psych evaluation and thats what im doing now. bout 3 more weeks till i enlist and believe me, it would have been ALOT better to wait tll i was better liek i am now

Edit

Also, dont try to Hide ANYTHING from your recruiter. if your straight up honest with your recruiter, they will do their best to get you in. They dont like being lied to, and if you lie to them and say nothings wrong, then crack infront of the doctors in the 9+ hour physical, they are going to be very mhm upset with you. to put it nicely. haha.

Be honest. dont lie. tell your recruiter. he will probably tell you Stop taking them, wait a week, then take you to meps since the medications will be out of your system. Now my Marine recruiter told me to lie, say nothing was wrong with me. I didnt think that was safe though given my state of being at the time so i was honest. i didnt wnat to put my whole platoon in danger cuz of me.

Believe me, it works out in the end.

Edit 2= Sad to say, David p is lying. you are not allowed any medication ESPECIALLY psychiatric medication in the Army.

Edit again, lol. - You cant have any medications while in basic training. After however, if you "develop" this they might give you the medications, or discharge you.

And did it work for you?

no…however, i have social anxiety disorder, and after over a decade of trying different therapies and medications (including benzo's, such as xanax and klonopin) and antidepressants (such as prozac and paxil), i FINALLY found the type of medication that DOES work, and it doesn't stop working, so long as you take it as directed:

*stimulants*, such as Adderall, believe it or not!

just 43 minutes after my very first dose, i went from not being able to walk down my street, to being able to sing in front of a crowd of 500 - with NO problem…and, i still take the same exact low dose i started out with years ago: 10mg Adderall XR once daily (in the morning).

I’m hosting an exchange student this year. She’s got a lot of anxiety about school and her relocation and isn’t sleeping :( She’s asked me to take her to the doctor for medications for this, but as an Ambien user myself I disagree.
We talk openly about the stress on her and do what we can to help. I’d like if somebody could advise me on natural remedies for these problems with diet and vitamins, etc…
Thanks!

Hi Sammy, I can sympathize & try 2 offer my solutions…I 2 dint like medications & feel that in this day & age people over use them to assist things that can b remedied naturally.I would maybe have a night time Chill Down & relax by sitting watching a feel good movie & then a nice bath with Lavender essential oils ( only a small drop ) then a milky drink, like horlicks or ovaltine….The mind tends 2 relax more when the body is…I hope this helps & I’m so glad that u talk openly about Stress, as that’s 1/2 the battle also…

did it affect your delivery? Not only in the state of having your children early or late, but also did it make delivery difficult? I have been reading on it because I have generalized anxiety disorder and it says that anxiety causes preterm labor. I’m just curious how many of you it affected. Thank you!

I have generalized anxiety also and see a psychatrist for it and have for almost a year. I was pregnant from February and delivered at 37 weeks and 3 days on October 14th. It didn’t affect my pregnancy or my delivery at all. I had to be induced due to severe preclampsia.

During my pregnancy I just tried to avoid stressful situations that seemed to cause me anxiety like dealing with my father in law who is an awful person. I started getting panic attacks dealing with him and his wife so I stopped seeing them at all, to protect myself and my baby.

Also, delivery wasn’t really all the difficult for me. I was nervous and anxious about being induced but once things got under way I was on so much pain medication that I felt pretty decent all things considered!

If you ask your Ob you can also take some medications while you are pregnant to help control anxiety and/or depression. I was prescribed Zoloft during my pregnancy but chose not to take it and do therapy instead. But my OB said it was safe to take as long as I was off of it by 36 weeks (assuming I would go full term) so the baby had enough time to get the drug out of its system.

I think you should be just fine. Just try to relax as much as you can an avoid things and or people that make your anxiety worse.

Good luck!

P.S. Anxiety can make you more likely to suffer from post partum deprssion and post partum anxiety after you deliver so be sure to watch out for the signs of those and get help if you need it. I’ve been diagnosed with both and am taking anti depressants and doing therapy every other week and it’s helped me cope a lot better with all of the changes going on.

I get really bad panic attacks, like when driving or going to class and I can't control them. it's really getting to be bothersome and is very stressful.
I keep hearing that controling your breathing is helpful. But when I get an attack, I can't breathe. Already I have fainted in class because I couldn't breathe and I got lightheaded.

I had the same problem. There are plenty of medications out there to treat this problem. I have been on Paxil CR since I was 12 years old. I find it very helpful. Also there are breathing techniques and other calming techniques to use. There are books available most likely at your local library on this subject.

everything in my life is crazy right now between, a legal issue with my father due to abuse issues which is being taken care of by the state, losing my house and job, and trying to put things ack together again. not to mention im very sick in mass general hospital with GI problems. plus i just found out today that my fiance is bipolar, manic depressive, and has extreme anxiety. i mean, i already knew this because ive been dealing with it from the start, but since all this crap happened with my life a month ago, he decided to get help and is going through counseling, a psychologist, and medications, we’re also looking into a support group we can go to once a month. i mean, ive been dealing with this since ive met him, but between that and whats going on in my life, plus the problems in his life that concern us, everything is on hold, and its so hard, because i have to walk on eggshells around him until his treatment is over and hes better. and im havin gtrouble not being angry with him. i know its not his fault and its the illness, but he says so many mean things. ive talked to my aunt who had bipolar disorder and she said its the illness talking and to not think twice about ti and hell apologize when hes well. but its so hard because theres so many things im upset about with him and i cant talk to him abou them because theyll send him into another episode. the counselor told me to wait until his treatment is over because theres nothing we can do about it right now. i know everything will et better, but its so hard right now. if theres anyone out there that can talk ot me and relate or give advice please do. thankyou so much.

i understand that it is unbearably awful right now.
but everything is headed in a positive direction.

start keeping a journal, about what is going on , what you think, what you are mad at. at least that way you can get it out of your head so it doesn’t keep spinning around making you crazy.

Maybe when you boyfriend is better, you will brink up some of the worst problems, maybe not. but this is what can help ou get through it.

Strangely enough, going to Al-anon meeting might also help. even though he is not an alcoholic. They teach you how to deal which things you can’t control, and where to draw the line.

best of luck.

What I mean is are there any medications that won’t effect breastfeeding? My counselor says that I am more than likely going to need help with the anxiety because it has gotten out of control but I don’t want to take breastfeeding away from my baby. Are there medications that are safe? Has anyone else gone through this?

I friend of mine had this happen to her; she started having such severe panic attacks that she needed to be on medication. First she tried Zoloft b/c it was ok for breastfeeding, but it wasn’t the right medication for her. She eventually did stop breastfeeding to go on a medication that could relieve her anxiety better. I think she was put on Lexapro or something like that. She also was having some trouble breastfeeding which was complicating the anxiety. Ultimately, while she was initially bummed, she feels so much better and feels so much better about the type of parent she is now that her anxiety is under control.

While breastfeeding is super important, so is your mental health. You may be doing great things for your baby by breastfeeding and not so great things for your baby by not getting the proper help you need with anxiety medication. Of course, do what you can to try to use meds approved for breastfeeding. Also try cognitive behavioral therapy or something else to help you cope without meds. But remember that being super anxious all the time isn’t helping you be a good parent. And in the long run, if it’s truly out of control, doing what’s best for you is definitely doing what’s best for your baby.

I have been on lexapro 20 mg for almost 2 years because of depression, but recently I have been feeling like maybe its not working??? i am wondering what actions to take to get on a good reliable medication that will treat these symptoms:constant tension, worry, (i also have been diagnosed with adult add)-the lack of concentration and drive to do daily activities, low energy, some days i will only get 2 hours of sleep while others I could sleep all day and still wake up tired as hell. I am always tired, and lately i think i have been having panic attacks…in a stressful situation-mostly when i interact with other people. I get this like paranoid feeling that I doing something stupid (maybe i am who knows, i sometimes care…sometimes i don't) or that other people are thinking that I am crazy by the way they look at me or talk to me. i know its wierd. But the anxiety is really start to eat away at me here lately. I don't understand why this happens, i used to be the cont'd…….
I used to be such a sociable interactive person…but the medication just is not working. I have heard of some medications to take this edge off (or chemically balance?) me, but what are some to recommend to talk to my doctor about?

Either you need a different dose of the medication, or you need a different medication. But don't alter the dose on your own - you need to speak to your doctor.

I really think that if you haven't already, you should see a psychiatrist and get a proper evaluation; they can tell you if you're suffering from depression, or anxiety - or a mixture.

They will also switch you to a more effective medication. The SSRIs, such as lexapro, often don't do enough for people.

Do speak to your doctor - you don't have to go on feeling this way!
