I've had panic/anxiety attacks since Sept. 07. It started after my dad died, and I went to a counselor once. It helped me for about a week, and then the attacks came back.
I had a minor stroke about a month and a half ago, and my anxiety attacks have never been this bad. I've been having these really weird feelings, and it's hard to explain. When I was reading about strokes online, one website said that depression can happen after having a stroke. And now, I've found this website… http://www.natural-herbal-remedies.net/anxiety.html
Where it says "* About 80 percent of depressed people suffer psychological symptoms: unrealistic apprehension, fears, worry, aggitation, irritability, or a panic attack." I've realized that I've had every single one of these symptoms. The "unrealistic apprehension" thing is the weirdest, scariest feeling I've ever felt.
So my question goes out to the psych's out there…. Once I go back to a psychologist and get rid of my depression, will this feeling of being "unrealistic" go away, or am I seriously going crazy, and this feeling will always be here?
You are doing the right thing by getting psychological help for the problem. Chances are the painful memory of your father dying sparked anxiety in you, making you more uneasy by the small things in life than ever before. I can understand how the unrealistic apprehension alarms you - it's definitely something that must be dealt with, with the help of a professional, of course.
Once you go back to the psychologist, your depression is sure to be aided. However, it needs some soul and willpower on your part, and you must not let fear wrap around your common sense. These feelings are unrealistic for a reason. They are sentiments that can really rile someone up, but really the feelings are irrational and entirely in your mind. You're not going crazy - you're going through a difficult phase in your life that a psychologist can help you with. However, you must really be patient and block off all negativity that tries to stop you from getting well. You said it yourself - 80 percent of people are in a similar boat. Seeing as that is, there's no reason for you to feel alone.
I wish you the best of luck.

I have been having constipation, with horrible nausea, panic attacks, stomach aches and fatigue. I am under a crap load of stress, 8 classes, 3-5 hours of homework a night and trying to hold a 4.0. Could Stress cause problems like this?
Gastrointestinal problems are often one of the first signs that a person is overstressed. Stress and anxiety can cause long term health problems, so it is important you try to relax. Your stomach problems could lead you to develop stress ulcers. But don’t worry too much! There are things you can do to relax.
Keep in mind that while school is a stressful thing now, it will be a thing of the past in the future. Make sure you have a good balance with school and find some time to do things you enjoy and take your mind off your studies.
Check out the reference site below. It has a lot of information on the health problems stress can cause, as well as a bunch of ways to help reduce your stress.
Good luck!

other DOGS in the family are away from home? Suppose there are two dogs in the family and one is said to have separation anxiety, because it whines and scratches at the door continuously when the owner is away from home. If the OTHER DOG is away, will the dog with separation anxiety howl and scratch at the door until it returns?
Say, in the example, the second dog has been dropped off at the groomer, and the owner is back at home with the first dog.
no. separation anxiety is about the people not other pets.

I have anxiety and alway feel like crap. Just like 30 min ago i got tired out of no where and felt sick now i feel a lil better. Body aches, head aches, nausea, tired. It really suck. Only 19
Stress and anxiety can cause many things, many diseases, and even the symptoms you are describing. Stress kills. Worry kills . You need to pray more and leave your stresses with God and let Him work them out for you. Talk to a pastor and search for answers on how to reduce stress in your life. God wants you happy and joyful, and He tells us He gives us a spirit of hope and love, not of fear and worry.
Place your hope in the Lord Jesus Christ, and Let Him help you with everything, He will if you ask. I was like you for years, and I ended up so sick with lots of problems But I got out of that situation and God brought healing.
God bless you young man.
can anyone give any other techniques other than "deep breathing" to aid in the relief of anxiety symptoms, namely heavy head, dizzyness, sinking feeling, chest pain, etc. thank you
I dont drink tea, coffee, or fizzy drinks. hence no caffeine
Talk to someone who also experiences anxiety. You both probably will not be having it at the same time. It is tremendously healing to share your feelings with someone who has been there and gotten the T-shirt. Also, someone who experiences anxiety from time to time will be able to understand you and talk a language you will understand and be able to use.
When I occasionally feel anxious, I tell everybody. I am sure some people would rather I didn't, but just about everyone offers me something to help calm me right down. I like what one person told you here just now about being able to see that often anxiety is situational. When you are in a situation or beginning to enter a situation where you have experienced anxiety before, you may expect to experience it again, so that gives you a chance to change course and to avoid it. Or to take it apart so it doesn't pack a whallop.
I know that when we experience anxiety everything seems to take forever. That awful scared tension seems to go on and on no matter what people tell you. The peak of the adrenalin rush lasts only about ten minutes - your body really can't sustain that kind of tension much past twenty minutes - and that is a blessing, isn't it? So when you are feeling upset, you know that as unpleasant as it may be it will not last too long.
I hope this reply is helpful to you. Try to find someone you can call if you begin to experience an upset. I know you must know someone, and it would be a great help to you to have that phone number handy as an emergency route you can go when the crazy feelings begin, you wouldn't have to just sit there and feel awful any more… you would have a battle plan in place and know what to do. I had a twenty-four prayer line I used to call and it was tremendously healing (again) to hear a calm and steady voice while I was upset. It would start the downward direction of calm and peace that my body so strongly needed while upset.
I have tried almost everything there is to try - homeopathy, hypnotherapy, NLP, EFT, vitamins, diet, exercise to list but afew.
Serious answers only please, I really am looking for quality advice.
I saw a psychiatric nurse today who has arranged for me to see a psychiatrist soon. I'm just wondering what to expect as I'm really scared - hence my question.
one thing you need to know is that you are not alone, in your depression or trying to resolve it. you need to have someone you can talk to, a friend, pastor, or anyone that you can completely trust with your feeling. i have found that i get depressed when things are really stressful for me and i feel overloaded. just having a good listener to grip to sometimes helps, keep your self busy, dont fall into the traps of not eating, sleeping alot, overeating, smoking and drinking, this make it worse. make a list of what bothers you deep down, got thru the list and mark off the ones that you have no control over, put the others in order of importance, try to fix or forget a problem a week. just remember what you are worring about today will be forgotten next week. LIFE IS NOT WHAT HAPPENS TO YOU BUT HOW YOU REACT TO IT.
HOPE THIS HELPS
and one more thing, always remember GOD loves you and is on your side.
I work in an office and everyday I seem to get these reocurring symptoms for no reason at all it normally starts in the afternoon my heart starts racing and I get dizzy with a heavy headache which makes my eye sight poor and makes my clumsy. This is turn makes my irritable. What is this and why if there is no reason behind it should I get it my job isn’t stressful?
Your symptoms first need to be checked out by a medical doctor to rule out any physical causes.
If there are no apparent physical causes, it is likely that the symptoms you are experiencing are caused by anxiety. Sometimes anxiety can happen without any identifiable cause. The fact that your symptoms occur in the afternoon suggests that there may be a physical cause (like hypoglycemia) or a pattern that your body has been conditioned into.
If your symptoms are indeed caused by anxiety, you might find that relaxation techniques and calming self-talk are quite effective (see links below for information).
An excellent book on anxiety is “When Panic Attacks,” by David Burns. It describes several techniques for decreasing anxiety. I highly recommend this book.
I have included some links to my website for more information on anxiety symptoms and using relaxation to decrease stress and anxiety. On the relaxation downloads page there is a relaxation audio script entitled “Relaxation to Relieve Anxiety” that might be helpful for you.
Hope this helps!

Ive had a couple of panic attacks for the past month and have some symptoms. One of them is that I have loss my appetite, but its weird because I can eat things that I really enjoy eating. I get sweaty hands all the time but its not like im having a panic attacks at the time. Also when I go outside or something it feels like the world outside looks like a dream. I get panicky sometimes when that happens. I dont know what to do anymore, any help would be appreciated THANKS
Yeah i have that alot too. Anxiety symptoms last as long as your anxious though. So just try and relax. Take some deep breaths, in through your nose, out through your mouth, and this should make the physical symptoms of anxiety some better, such as the sweating and stuff, but the feeling of being in a dream might become a bit worse. Maybe think about seeing a psychiatrist or something. I know it snot very fun, but its better than feeling like that.

I’m doing a research paper on the five main types of anxiety disorders, Obsessive-Compulsive, Post-Traumatic Stress, Panic, Social Anxiety, and Generalized Anxiety. Are all of these disorders treated with cognitive-behavioral therapy and SSRI’s? I was wanting to be able to sum up the treatment in one paragraph at the end rather than dedicating a paragraph about treatment to each disorder. Thanks in advance. [:
Not all, because different people may react differently to medication. Doctors are trying to find the minimum effective dose, with the medication with the least side effects. If SSRI does not help they have to switch to a more serious medication, with perhaps more severe side effects.
Many medications originally approved for the treatment of depression have been found to relieve symptoms of anxiety. These include certain SSRIs, tricyclic antidepressants, MAOIs, and the newer atypical antidepressants.
Antidepressants are often preferred over the traditional anti-anxiety drugs because the risk for dependency and abuse is smaller. However, antidepressants take up to 4 to 6 weeks to begin relieving anxiety symptoms, so they can’t be taken “as needed.” For example, antidepressants wouldn’t help at all if you waited until you were having a panic attack to take them. Their use is limited to chronic anxiety problems that require ongoing treatment.
The antidepressants most widely prescribed for anxiety are the SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors).
