hiii
for months now, ive been getting daily symptoms of nervousness and anxiety - weirdly enough, i wouldnt say its stress, im rarely ’stresed out’ - just always worried and panicy
i panic over really silly things - what i said to someone 2 weeks ago, what they think about me, regretting things ive said or done, constantly feeling guilty about ridiculous thing - consciously, its things i know i shouldnt be worried about, but i just cant help it. on a daily basis these are my symptoms:
shaking
tension headaches
fast heart rate
even when i breathe in as much as i can, its as though i need to breathe in more - like i cant get enough air
that ‘heart sinking’ feeling when u get a wave of adrenaline
insomnia
restlessness
feelings of guilt

and a few times a week , i have spells where my legs feel as though they are going to give way, and my eyes go ‘black (if that makes sense - it feels as though im about to faint)
im quite young, so i dont want to reply on medication, but lately im sick and tired of the daily panic and strong feelings of unease - what mild medications are out there for my symptoms ???
thank you!

Hey there!

It does sound like you are suffering from anxiety. I wouldn’t jump to medications just yet though, as there’s really no such thing as "mild" when it comes to this kind of medication.

There are a number of things you can do straight off the bat to help combat your anxiety. Firstly, you mention feeling like you can’t breathe. People with anxiety tend to do more shallow breathing. Place your hand on your stomach, and breathe in slowly. You should feel your hand rise, and if you don’t then keep trying until you do. Now you’re breathing in fully, instead of shallow chest breathing. This helps ensure you have enough oxygen, which could also be the reason you’re feeling tired, and helps calm anxiety.

Warm hot water bottles on your neck and shoulders can help relax those muscles, leading to less tension headaches. Make sure your posture is good too -anxiety can lead to you withdrawing both mentally and physically, so it pays to keep checking your posture.

Feeling guilty is one of the most common reasons for feeling anxious, as it leads to obsession. However, you can stop this! There are many methods, so you need to find one that works for you. Some people find writing these thoughts down helps. A good way is simply to forgive yourself! Tell yourself you’re only human, you didn’t purposely do anything bad, and so you can’t give yourself such a hard time about it! It takes practice, but it’s an important and valuable skill to be able to forgive yourself.

Distractors are also a help. When you feel yourself worrying, tell yourself they’re just thoughts! You could think about an alien coming in to your house and stealing your clothes, and you know that’s silly. You need to do the same with the thoughts of guilt! So try and dismiss them, and move on to a distractor. Things like reading, painting, watching a movie. These all take your mind off it. You don’t need to sit there letting you think those thoughts, because that’s all they are!

These may all sound like simple solutions, but the main thing is you need to ACTIVELY do them. You can’t just be passive, and decide "I’ll stop being anxious now, as soon as I figure out if my friend is mad at me because I feel I wasn’t listening enough to her last week…" you have to right there stop that train of thought! It’s tricky, but you can make it second-nature, and it’s well worth it!

If you start taking these small positive steps, I’m sure your anxiety will start to fade! Feeling in control can itself prevent the anxiety! Medication is a final solution, and I’m pretty confident you can control your anxiety without it :)

Five days ago I shocked myself by accidentally touching a prong while trying to pull out a cord. I felt a shock in my hand and later I had a headache but otherwise I felt fine. I did start becoming worried that I damaged my heart however because I am an anxious person in general. Two days ago I started getting mild, dull chest pain which has me worried that I actually did damage it. I have been known to get anxiety related chest pain in the past however (I went to a doctor and he cleared me). Is it possible to damage your heart with the amount of current in a household outlet or could it just be my anxiety? I have been running everyday and it feels fine and I’m not short of breath or anything.

Joanna … be at peace … you definitely didn’t damage your heart at all. If a person is grounded and touches a live wire then it is possible for the electricity to cross the chest (e.g. touching a live wire with both hands could kill you). In that case the person actually feels the charge going through their chest which can stop the heart. In your case you just got shocked, that’s all. Take care ! Chip

Left chest pain/anxiety?

Posted by: admin | Comments (2)

I have been having chest pain the left region of my torso since about 6am this morning. I have been VERY stressed this past week over money issues, school and friendship problems. The pain even spread throughout my left arm causing a sharp pain and some numbness in my chest. I have had anxiety issues for a few years now and my mom (in the medical industry for over 30 years) seems to think it is being caused by all of the stress and anxiety I have been experiencing and it is manifesting its self in the left part of my chest (feels like my heart) I thought I was initially having a heart attack, but my mom took my vitals and everything was normal. Do you think I should be worried about there being something wrong with my heart? or do you think this alarming pain is being caused by anxiety? It wouldn’t be so scary if it wasn’t in the place right next to a major organ pumping life through me. I have no previous history of heart problems and I am a 20 year old female, weighs 140 lbs. help!
It also seems to get worse when I smoke weed, the pain does. But I do not know if this is a cause of the marijuana or of my own anxiety/paranoia when I smoke it. (does not occur all the time, been a pot smoker for years now)
Thanks ASS. But I hardly need to lose weight. I actually havn’t been having an appetite because I’m so stressed out, despite smoking weed. What a horrible answer.

its not heart problems. it is probably u pressed against your arm/chest when u sleep to a point it lacked oxygen for a short time. These sharp pains are normal. Plus, some people have these symptoms of random chess pains due to a weaker chest.

***New***
That would explain a lot. Weed weakens your lungs! Apart from that, majority weed users smoke weed due to anxiety and such. My suggestion is stop smoking weed (although its hard), meet a counselor and have a body check.

like arm pain, itchy underarm, jaw pain, panic, feeling like i’m going to have a heart attack, feeling uncomfortable ALL THE time, etc. I’m worried it’s something worse. Is it? I’ve been to 2 different hospitals in the past 2 weeks for my high heart rate increasing over 145, saying it’s just anxiety. all tests of heart problems came back normal, but i’m still worried. Can anyone help?

You should see your physician and ask him to prescribe a tranquilizer such as diazepam (Valium) for anxiety. Your worry isn’t going to help your anxiety and your panic attacks are much more frightening than they are a health hazard. He may want you to have a complete physical exam with a full blood panel, ecg, eeg, etc. to ensure you have no underlying pathology triggering the episodes. Or, he may just give you a short term script for Valium or Xanax to see it that helps. Often it’s easier to identify the cause of psychic phenomena by trying a drug than it is to do a lot of expensive testing.

Of course, you need to learn to cope as well because panic episodes are largely psychogenic. However, if you’re at the beginning of panic, it may be difficult for you to control because one episode can increase the anxiety which will make the next episode more easily triggered and so on like positive feedback winding you up to the point where drug therapy is necessary to get you stabilized so relaxation therapy can work effectively. A lot is going to depend on the doctor because they are all over the map on these sorts of problems. And, today, with the DEA looking over their shoulders because of the problems with the abuse of legal pharmaceuticals, it’s more difficult for doctors to be liberal with their scripts for controlled substances.

Good luck and good health!!

Cold, Cough, Chest Pain, Anxiety?

Posted by: admin | Comments (1)

I have had a cough for a couple of days now. Additionally, I feel cold like I have a fever but my thermometer reads 97.0 degrees F. I have chest pain but it isn’t bad. Maybe a 1 or 2 on the pain scale, just like a dull ache. It’s not all over the place either, I can point to exactly where it hurts.

I’m freaking out, my heart rate is up and I have a history of anxiety problems. I’m standing up to write this because I’m scared and my neck is killing me.

I also haven’t slept in 26 hours, I’ve been trying to quit smoking (down to 5-7 a day after being a pack a day smoker for years) and my girlfriend has been kind of ill.

Is this just an anxiety attack or should I be worried?
I also had two pieces of garlic toast at about 10:30am (it’s 4pm now) with a can of mt dew. Before that I had a small snack about 3am and before that nothing until about 5pm yesterday.

Chest pain is about a quarter of an inch below my left collarbone. Earlier it was right in the middle of my chest. Also, it goes away when I get up and walk around (which is what I do when I’m anxious) but when I calm down and sit down, it aches again and starts the anxiety right back up.
Thanks for your response Colt45. I also suffer from Google Search Anxiety. Where I type symptoms into a search engine and it comes up "heart attacks, congestive heart failure, anemia, blah blah blah deadly diseases".

I am going to see a doctor about it, but I have to wait a week for health insurance to come in. I probably should’ve waited til after the doctor’s visit to cut way back on my smoking.

I think I just needed to hear someone tell me that I’m not dying lol. Thanks!

What you are experiencing is anxiety. The chest pain is most likely from smoking but your anxiety is making it out to be something worse. Anxiety can make you feel ill (like you have a fever). Calm down and get some sleep. If you are really concerned see a doctor, but like you said you have an anxiety problem so that is most likely the case. Anxiety can manifest itself in many ways.
Edit: Try focusing on something else. I know "calming down" is easier said than done. Try doing something that requires a lot of focus- hard math problems, riddles, video games you enjoy, go for a walk, have sex, do something to take your mind off of how you are feeling, and you will realize that you are calming down and you aren’t focused on your anxiety.

How to cope with anxiety symptoms?

Posted by: admin | Comments (2)

I have minor anxiety and I get some panic attacks everyday and I am getting really tired of them. I have two major symptoms that I don’t know how to get rid of. How do you cope with the feeling as though you can’t breathe? As well as the choking sensation or if there’s something stuck in your throat? These are really bothering me and I hope someone may have an answer.
Thanks!

Xanax, klonopine or ativan

This is a common symptom i experience.
Thanks.

It can be, yes. Anxiety affects different people in different ways. I would definitely go and see your doctor about it as they’ll be the best person to help you deal with it. They may prescribe you something or they may teach you how to deal with it in another way. But definitely go and see them.

Hi I’ve had chest pain on my left breast mostly and it’s always sore or aching sometimes it feels like its my heart and most of the time it’s under my breasts? Like where my bra line is. That’s where it gets tight alot of the times. I know it’s not my bra because it’s very loose but anyways it’s been doing this for a while. It’s sore when I go to bed and it’s sore when I wake up. Can anxiety chest pain do that? Make your chest sore for several days? I am constantly tensing up and worried but is this type of chest pain normal with anxiety? If so how do I get it to go away so I can quit being anxious about it

Yes anxiety can cause this, muscle soreness. If you can feel the pain or change how the pain feels by pressing on it. It is not your heart.
If concerned see the doc.
Take care
