Misophonia literally means hatred of sound.
In other words, everyday sounds that you probably think are normal, drive me insane!
Like chewing, tapping, anything repetitive.
I’m a college student and I cannot focus while in class because there’s always people around me smacking gum or clicking pens.
NO I cannot ignore it, my brain doesn’t allow it.
This condition literally controls my life and I’m tired of it.
Is there anything I can do?
I have the same thing, have had it for about 10 years or so. I tend to cope by either avoiding the sound (by leaving the room or something), but most of the time I use listening to music to help or a lot of the time, earplugs.
I use Bioears soft silicone earplugs which come in a pack of 6 and are squishy, once you’ve used them you can wash them and re-use them a couple of times. Once you have the earplugs in it’s a bit like being underwater. You can still hear louder sounds like people speaking but the softer (more annoying) sounds are drowned out a bit.
Alternatively you can try and find an audiologist that may be able to help. As of yet there is no real treatment but you can have sound therapy to see if it can help a bit.
I’d recommend getting enough sleep every night as well and finding a way to relax (meditation is usually recommended also). Sleep and anxiety make the symptoms worse in many cases.
There are a lot of support forums on the web for this with people’s experiences so you might get some better answers there.
Can Panic attacks/ anxiety attacks cause discoloration of your fingernails?
Posted by: | CommentsI’m just curious because I’ve had a lot of panic and anxiety attacks and just noticed that my finger nails have an off-white line across them and a bit of a dark purple color just under that. So is this caused by panic/ anxiety attacks or is it something more serious than that?
Discoloration of the fingernails is usually caused by a variety microorganisms. However, it can also be the panic attacks, they pose many risks to the body’s immune system. Anyway, you should see a doctor and get examined. If you want to treat the panic attacks you can try this site for a natural method: http://tinyurl.com/ylkuwhx/panic
What, if anything, is the greatest cause of concern or anxiety for you on vacation?
Posted by: | CommentsWhat do you spend the most time worrying about, and has it ever happened to you?
Getting lost, and yes, it did happen to me once (a lady in a toll booth was able to point me in the right direction though). I was only lost for about 20 minutes, but it was still nerve-wracking, I thought I was never going to find my hotel!

Is it possible to suffer from chronic anxiety?
Posted by: | CommentsI lost my job a year and half ago due to health problems. I am suffering from cognitive impairment, muscle pain/weakness, ear pain and joint pain. I am still waiting a diagnosis. since then i have had bad anxiety. I have gone to counselling and tried many things to get rid of the anxiety eg healthy eating, exercise, positive thinking but nothing seems to help. Are there meds i could take to help? Can anxiety persists for years? Are there physical illnesses that can cause anxiety? I am male and 23 years old.
Anxiety can persist indefinitely however it is not due to physical disease. CBT is the most successful management, but it does have a 30% fail rate. SSRIs can dramatically improve symptoms, Fluoxetine (trade name Prozac) is probably the most commonly used.
How to keep your mind off bad memories that are causing anxiety stress and depression?
Posted by: | CommentsDo you ever get over memories of abuse, not childhood but late teen years/adult? And can you do it yourself without help?
Will you ever feel ok in a physical relationship without feeling dirty or bad/wrong? Is it always going to make you cringe and your heart beats fast and you feel sick inside, when you see a romantic part in a movie and fast forward it? Will you ever feel like a normal person?
Hi
well I speak from personal experience. I was abused as a child and told no one. So it was kept all inside.
I felt guilty and dirty and separate from other people.
It wasn’t until I got older and met my partner and i told im what had happened as I was very shy and nervous about being intimate with him. Just talking about it was like lifting a huge weight. The support I received from him made me realize that it was not my fault and that it was something in the past that i could not change and to look forwards only. The future i could control well my future anyway.
I really think that talking to someone close or to a counselor. Both of these people will not judge you and they will be able to give you strength and a new way to look on your life.
Anxiety feeds on anxiety, the more you fear your problem the worse you will feel.
Learning to relax is also really really useful too. A relaxed body and mind cannot panic or feel anxious and the more you practice relaxation techniques the more your body will be able to cope.
So if i were you i would find someone to talk to and explore some relaxation skills. It may not be an over night answer but believe me after many years of panic attacks etc i came out the other side and no longer have these feelings.
See this web site for some ideas on relaxations skills etc
Don’t give up there is a light at the end of the tunnel even though you don’t feel that way now.
best wishes Kate
