chest pain and anxiety ?

By admin

I had tests done 6 months ago for my heart (stress test and scan of the heart) both were normal
I have anxiety and i got chest pains a few days ago and they are not going away. i went to the doctors yesterday and he listened to my heart and said i was ok. i got an ecg done today and it picked up irregularities which i had gotten before and all tests came back ok
The pains are in the center of my chest and fade off and come back

The doc said yesterday that i didnt need to get the ecg done for a week or two so he was not worried at all so i dont know if im just anxious and worried over nothing

Obviously if you did have AF it would have been detected by now. How old are you? Do you have any other medical problems? With the tests you have had done, the majority of abnormalities would have shown up. Did your GP do a 24 hour ECG/cardiac memo? This is often more useful for detecting arrhythmia’s as some are only evident when they are in that pathway.

Anxiety and palpitations are a bit of a vicious circle to be honest. Palpitations are made worse my stress and anxiety, and the more one worries about them, the worse they are and the more one gets palpitations, the more they worry!
This could all be non cardiac related of course. It could be indigestion or even musckloskeletal pain.

If you are young fit and healthy it is very unlikely to be angina or even artery spasm. I don’t think you are worried over nothing but I think if you are overly worried about it, it will make the situation worse.

Just because you are still having symptoms, it doesn’t mean that your GP hasn’t done his job properly,- try and look at this rationally. If you did have anything wrong it would have most likely shown up by now. The echo would have assessed the structure of the heart and will have excluded abnormalities, the stress test will have looked at how your heart performs under stress (exercise) and the ECG will most likely have detected any arrhythmic abnormalities.

I have had anxiety issues in the past, more so during exam times and the impact stress can have on the body is well documented. Try exercising, take up more hobbies, occupy your mind basically. It’s highly unlikely that anything is wrong here. Keep in contact with GP and report any new symptoms.

I wonder if you could have Arterial Fibrillation, this can be coursed by stress, do get your Doctor to get a ECG done.
Then I would suggest that you go on a relaxation course so that you learn how to unwind and calm down, if it is worked that courses this then you need to look at your work load and see if there is any way you can reduce this.

I can not believe that last post!

Tramadol is completely useless and very poor advice!

You need to keep a close relationship with your doctor and demand the service you need. Also stress related illness apart; some antidepressants can cause heart problems, so get that checked out too. The ECG is normal when taking antidepressants for that reason. I figure your doctor is expecting some slight problems, perhaps as you describe them. If in doubt, get a second opinion. People here can not possibly know what your doctor knows about your case.
