Can you help with Anxiety symptoms?
ByFor the last 22 years I’ve suffered with severe anxiety problems. In that time I’ve also had the physical symptoms that often go with anxiety - psychosomatic symptoms, anxiety attacks, and panic attacks. These have changed in severity and frequency over time, going up and down.
Since the beginning of December last year they have got pretty bad again, and have been fairly fierce these last 4 days. It’s one thing when this happens at home, but it’s getting more severe when I go out, and I’m worrying folk will start to notice, and worry what the hell is wrong with me. Which of course, only adds to my anxiety.
At present the most common and worst symptoms are: feeling like I’m wearing a tight corset, as my entire torso feels tense, my breathing is restricted, shallower, and more noticeable, and I can’t relax it. Also, I get a lot of tension in the neck and shoulders, feeling like they’re knotting up, and I feel I have to move my head and shoulders to "work it loose", which is noticeable to others.
I have tried progressive muscular relaxation, and breathing exercises, but these don’t always help much. Thanks in advance for any advice.
Hi from a fellow sufferer
I have found that with anxiety - particularly in relation to the physical symptoms - knowledge is power. I used to get the whole lot - tight chest, unable to breath, terror I was having a heart attack, ectopic beats etc, but once I really accepted that these were NOT dangerous and couldn’t harm me, I gradually stopped worrying about them and they eased up considerably.
Can I recommend a fantastic site for you? It’s called "No More Panic" (just type it into google) and it has a wealth of information about all the things you describe, plus the chance to hear about other sufferers. This isn’t spam, I’ve just used it in the past when my anxiety has reared up again, and found it’s helped a lot.
Good luck, hon. You’re not alone

I have anxiety also. When going into an anxiety or panic attack you need to get your mind off of it. Going for a walk is good,if it is so severe that you cannot control it then you need to just go to the doctor and get anxiety medication. Anxiety is the flipside of depression so try to do things that make you happy which will shun away depression and in turn, lessen your anxiety

If you haven’t done so, you need to see a specialist in anxiety disorders. There are medications and therapies to help you.
Tell your parents what’s going on; it always helps if the people around you are aware of the problem, if only because you can lessen your fear that they will find out, and that will diminish the anxiety to some extent. Professionals recommend that people suffering from anxiety tell someone close to them when the anxiety is particularly difficult to handle.
You really shouldn’t have had to spend 22 years coping with this. You need ongoing professional assistance and medication monitoring.

Hi, I have suffered from ocd for years due to anxieties. I tried all the relaxation techniques and talking to therapists but the only thing that worked for me was medication. Ive been on it ages now and have no plans to ever come off them, it has completly changed me. I still do suffer from my complusions and anxieties but its sooo much easier to cope with them now. If you havent already tried them, i would sincerely recommend it. Goodluck xxx
