Is chronic anxiety purely caused by a lack of serotonin, ie: always related to depressive illness?
ByIt seems anxiety is always linked with depression, is it always caused by a serotonin imbalance and thus always needs to be treated with antidepressants or could it be a result of some other physical problem, such as over production of adrenaline or something else? I have been suffering from chronic daily anxiety but i have no symptoms of depression whatsoever so i am confused as to the best method of treatment. thank you for any help!
I have anxiety too and have had it for quite a while. I don’t have depression either - you can have both, but not necessarily. I have been getting professional help for many years and it really helped me. I’m sure every case is different, but for me - I have some meds (lorazepam) I take when I need them, but don’t need to take them very often. I like to carry them around as a "crutch." I found that just having them with me helps me get by. My Dr. told me about some books that have been helpful too. I am not cured, but it it very manageable now. There is also a good resource here http://www.adaa.org/ They have some good info.
Send me an email if you want more information.

You can have anxiety without depression. You need to see a doctor as to the best method of treatment, and if you feel you are not getting good answers from that doctor ask for a referral to another. There is no one set treatment that works for everyone.

It isn’t always related to depression, you can have an anxiety disorder on it’s own. There are anti-anxiety meds, I take Klonapin as needed for it. It’s a symptom of depression, so a lot of dr’s will give people anti-depressants for it, I took Paxil at one time for both.

Likely. I think there is something like a 50% comorbidity rate with people that have anxiety issues and depression. So it certainly seems like one can lead to the other. Also, chronic anxiety is often treated with SSRI’s (lexapro, paxil, prozac). Acute anxiety is different I think, the method of treatments suggests that anways (sedatives like xanex or valium wich actually depress the nervous system).
