How will Citalopram help me and how long before i feel better?
Hi. This morning my doctor prescribed me Citalopram 20mg for my depressed mood and anxiety. How will this help me and how long before i feel better?

Do you mean scientifically how? Or like how will you feel better?

Well scientifically, citalopram is an SSRI so it blocks the reuptake of Serotonin in the brain. Therefore increases serotonin levels in the brain- and ups mood!

With how will you feel better, I found that my motivation came up, which was the most noticable thing at first. I also noticed my anxiety go down. And also- I began to feel like even if things did go wrong, that I could cope with them. Whereas before I could not.
It also increased my mood dramatically, as well as helping me to stay away from self harming and putting a stop to my suicide ideation.

In general, it was very helpful! And I was only on 10mg!

Urrm I think after about a month I realised how much had changed.
But it was strange. Like I couldn’t tell at the time how much better things were, because it changed gradually. But thats not to say there wasn’t much change, for me there was a lot. Like A LOT! Even last week I was out with my friends and one of them said to me "Would you have been able to come out tonight if it wasn’t for the pills?" and the answer was definitely no.

I think the changes probably started from about a week in taking them, and by a month- 6 weeks, I had the full benefit of them.

Persevere, and if they don’t work, try something else, you deserve to feel good. Good luck.

Certain chemicals in our brain control how we feel. It is thought that low levels of a chemical called serotonin can lead to depression and other conditions. Citalopram works by helping to regulate serotonin levels in our body, easing the symptoms of depression and feelings of panic.

How quickly it works will depend on the individual. Make sure you complete the full course as prescribed by your GP.

If this info doesn’t help you go back and see your GP they will be able to explain far better than we can.

Good luck, I hope you feel better soon.

It’s supposed to be a few weeks but it didn’t agree with me, it made me sleep all of the time. I had to set alarms to wake me for when I had to go out and pick up the kids from school, halfway through a sentence and I would be sleeping. Doc changed it to another drug and it’s much better for me. A friend of mine was also put on it and it made her aggressive and hostile.

I also take these, and have been taking them for about 2 months I think, and I have began feeling better all ready.

They work by increasing the amount of serotonin in your brain, as low serotonin is what leads to low moods.

For me I began to feel better after about a month, but it’s very gradual, every day I’m a little happier :)

Citalopram is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) class antidepressant that will effectively increase the amount of serotonin in your brain. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that can reduce anxiety and depression.

Most antidepressants including Citalopram take 4-6 weeks to work. Also, some people will not respond to a specific antidepressant so multiple trials of different medications are required for some people.

I also recommend (if you have insurance that will pay for it) that you take the drug Lexapro/Cipralex (Escitalopram). It is almost the exact same drug as Citalopram but Escitalopram works better because it only contains the compound that helps. Citalopram has the same compound but it also has an inactive compound that does not provide any benefit but it can cause side effects. So Escitalopram is a better drug with fewer side effects for most people (to put it simplistically).
