I am an 18year old who attends college.I am studying a levels.and for the last few days my anxiety has overtook me.I feel like an alien everything around me seems so weird.I feel like I’m nit really here and so detached from reality. Now it is stopping me from going college as I believe nothing at college is real.I just stay at home. My first episode of panic attacks and anxiety started about 4 years ago and Wih help from cbt I was ok.now it’s come back I’m just so scared.I need help asap but cbt has such a long waiting list. I was under a lot of stress before.and was such a happy and bubbly person before this.please help.even as I am writing now I believe that everything isn’t real.
I know exactly what you are going through! I’m going through the same thing. It is called derealization or depersonilization. It makes your life hell. I guess you can call it a "side effect" if anxiety. I’m still struggling with it at times. But just keep reassuring yourself that it will go away and trust me it’s nothing to be scared of just accept it and it will go away. This will not kill you! You should really see a doctor or a psychiatrist, they will help you.
Best of luck bro.
anyone who knows anything about zoloft and anxiety please help?
Posted by: | CommentsSo about six years ago when i was 16 i became very sick with anxiety. I got anxiety attacks so bad that I was afraid to leave the house. When i did, i felt like i couldn’t breath and i would shake and my heart would race. They put me on zoloft and it worked Absolutely amazing for me, everything fell back into place and i got myself back into school and everything was fine. I slowly took myself off of the medicine.
Now, six years later the anxiety attacks slowly started to come back. My doctor put me back on zoloft a few days ago but she started me at 50mg. I have only been talking it for three days but its making me very dizzy and all the sudden im feeling full blown anxiety again. I really dont want to get sick like was befor. I spent the whole day crying yesterday cause im afraid im gonna lose everything i worked so hard for because im getting sick all over again. I dont want to feel this way anymore. I spoke to the doctor and she said she may have started me on too high of a dosage and she said to cut it in half and start with 25mg. Do you think this will make a difference? Has anyone had similar problems? Please help.
I had the exact same thing as you do so I totally understand what you’re going through. It’s like you’re being smothered and you just can’t take in a normal breath. I was living a nightmare that I couldn’t wake up from. The mere thought of going outside terrified me and I was later diagnosed with agoraphobia.
The fact that Zoloft helped you back then should probably help you this time around as well. It’s normal that you feel dizzy or have other side effects when you start a new medication but that goes away after a while or maybe it would be a good idea to reduce the amount you take. Either way, if this medication helped you once before I see no reason as to why it wouldn’t help again.
Have you ever tried Klonopin or Ativan? They’re in the Benzodiazepine family of meds and they help a great deal with anxiety. I take Klonopin myself and it really does wonders! The only problem is that it can be habit-forming so NEVER exceed the amount prescribed.
Another thing you can try is going about it the natural way. I noticed that when I’m physically active my anxiety goes down and I feel so much better. Try going to the gym as often as you can but just in case you have agoraphobia as well, you can always pick the perfect time of day when their are few people outside and go for a jog at the park. If your condition is really bad than you should really get a treadmill
That’s what I used and still do and it’s helped me so much.
One last thing. Please do as many activities as you can regardless of what they are. The more you keep your mind busy on things that are productive and even fun the less time you’ll have to overthink or worry etc…
Hope I helped you some and feel free to email me if you want to discuss this some more
Good luck and I wish you all the best,
Adam
how to help anxiety from cannabis?
Posted by: | CommentsI have smoked some cannabis in the past not alot at all but I was young I was around 15,16. I stopped about 4 years ago cos it made me really anxious when I was high. After I stopped I went in to a period of anxiety and then It got better but it has come back recently. And I want to know if anyone has had a similar experience and it has got better for them or they know how to help in any way because sometimes I feel like Im scarred for life even though I have been to a doctor and they said there is nothing wrong with me. Does anyone have any advise or similar experience that they have got better from?
Thanks very much.
..First of all I would find a new doctor who also treats the mind as well as the body, or at least recognizes people also can get sick mentally, because obviously this one doesn’t..Anxiety is a disorder and you need help with it either through another doctor and/or a counsellor/therapist. You can do some introspection and search to find out what sets this off because a thought always comes before the anxiety does. Although we feel this physically, it is in the mind that this must also be treated…
Please help!! What should I do? In anxiety here!?
Posted by: | CommentsOkay. I helped someone to do a blood glucose test on 26th Nov 2009. I used an alcohol swab to clean her punture wound that was bleeding. I had a small OPEN cut on the finger I used to clean her wound. I was not wearing any gloves because there was not any around. I know its dangerous, but I didn’t have a choice. I do not know the background of her. Like what if she has some blood borne disease or even worse, HIV?
AND THEN, this fears me the most. I do not know if I accidentally pricked myself. I am freaking out, like really. I did not notice any blood after everything. And I had cleaned my hand with alcohol, it didnt sting or burn.. I kept thinking of it, like what if I pricked myself and didnt realised? I’m gg to live with HIV like in the dark forever? Its like one min I believe that I dont have it, the next I start panicing.
I Had fever, sorethroat and muscle aches on the 25th of Jan 2010. I saw a doctor, and he said I was fine. But I did not inform him about being worried if I pricked myself or not..because he kinda made fun of me being scared about this little thing..and my parents too.
Please Please help me? I dont know what to do. I cannot go to the doctor’s to test because I have a phobia of needles. I think that they are infected and once the needle goes inside of me, I’ll just loose my mind and think of all the possible HIV things or STDS i could have. I dont believe tt the needles used are sterile and safe..I get this kind of imgination. Please Help!
make sure to check with somebody
Do you find your psychiatrist won’t accept you have depersonalisation and not anxiety?
Posted by: | CommentsI think they won’t accept it because their tablets cannot help with it.
I know I have depersonalization but because I heard voices 10 years ago, I am down as schizophrenic. Whenever I mention depersonalisation symptoms they just say its anxiety, but i never feel anxious.
Thanks lifeless
Sulky - i haven’t heard voices for 10 years and I was off tablets for many years too without voices
Vincent - I much prefer alluring Jungian women LOL! I am british yes.
Depersonalization is frequently a symptom of anxiety, and docs tend to go to the most common cause of a symptom.
Having anxiety I occasional suffer from depersonalization, which I, personally, don’t enjoy.
However, it is my understanding that anyone, even those with no recognized disorder, can experience it, and as a symptom, it certainly isn’t limited to anxiety, and I can feel that way outside of an anxiety situation as well.
The truth is that every single person’s brain is wired differently, and most professionals find it difficult when they can’t fit you into a nice neat category.
I don’t believe, however, that hearing voices is a function of depersonalization. If you are schizophrenic, it is more likely a symptom of that.
Anyone here suffer with anxiety and ocd? And take zoloft to help?
Posted by: | CommentsI am suffering with ocd, anxiety and a little depression. Today i went for a docs appointment with my new doc. She gave me a prescription for prozac.
Who really takes that anymore? I asked her for zoloft it is used alot for ocd.
Can psychiatrists help you with antidepressants? Are there any cures in psychiatry today? How many people have been cured? What are your chances?

help with anxiety.. ?
Posted by: | Commentsok, ive been having so much trouble at school.. (bullying).
im in year 10 now, it all started in year 7 & half way through i stopped going..
ive been off for a very long time but i drift in & out of school still..
its just really hard to go into lessons & have confrontations with people.
my anxiety hits the roof when i go into school, id love to know how to calm it down abit?
pleasee help.
Same thing happens with me. I’m in middle school right now, but I was bullied a lot last year and some this year. I would miss sooo many days faking sick because of it. My advice: don’t focus on the negative. Focus on the good things that come of out it and that you’ll be out of school soon. I did that, and I wasn’t so nervous about going to school and the confrontations!
What can I do about my anxiety?
Posted by: | CommentsIt is getting so bad that i’m on a strong beta blocker to counter the anxiety. I’m going to the doctor tomorrow. Meditation is not for me. I’m a recovering drug addict. I smoked some pot last week and ever since i’ve been extremely nervous and anxious about everything. I can’t seem to calm down. Can someone help me? I mean what are some good tips for me to calm myself? Sometimes I feel as if i’m not even real. PLEASE HELP!!!
Here are my anxiety tips (print them out):
Try turning the heat up in the house or dressing more warmly. It is hard to feel anxiety when you are too warm Hot baths work, and at work/school, you can try running hot water over your hands.
Avoid caffeine; it increases anxiety. Also, some cold remedies & other drugs can cause anxiety. Look for the "agitation in children" warning on the box. Adults can get problems too.
Try meditation tapes like progressive muscle relaxation or guided imagery. Try The Anxiety and Phobia Workbook; check the library. There are guided imageries in there, you could make a recording or get a friend to do it. I read mine into the computer using a program called Audacity (free) and digitally altered my voice so it doesn’t bug me. Free 15 minute guided imagery download at healthjourneys.com.
Go out with friends, and if you don’t have any, find a club to join and MAKE yourself go until you actually look forward to it. A little laughing helps reduce anxiety.
Exercise at least 1/2 hour a day, and anytime you feel really hyper or depressed. Exercise is a great mood stabilizer and cuts down on anxiety a lot, research shows. Don’t do it a couple hours before bed, though, or you will be too hyped up.
Here are "sleep hygiene" tips. Go to bed and get up about the same time each day, even weekends. Don’t use your bedroom to watch TV and read and use the computer -just use the room as a bedroom Don’t do stuff that pumps you up right before bed, like exercising and using the computer. Wind down, instead - take a bath ? The light from the computer screen or TV wakes you up if you use them right before bed. Make the bedroom really dark, cover up the clock, even. Use a noise generator (makes wave sounds etc.) to cover up disturbing sounds. Try soundsleeping.com for free relaxing sounds downloads. Avoid caffeine in the afternoon and evening.
Put colorful happy things around the house, and let the sun in. Make a list of things that make you happy. Part of my list: A basket full of fluffy kittens, bread fresh from the oven, Fireworks popping on a warm summer evening, The first fireflies of the season, the scent of Jergen’s cherry almond lotion, The crisp sound of a saltine cracker breaking, fresh sheets on the bed, flicking a topwater plug out onto the still surface of a summer lake, etc. Use all your senses and read that list when you are breaking down. I also use familiar scents, like Jergens lotion, or vanilla or cloves. Scent can be comforting.
Work on time management if overwhelmed. Cut back on other responsibilities temporarily so you can spend more restorative time with friends and family. Ask for help. If there are people or situations that stress you , identify them and reduce them as much as possible.
Learn to breathe. Put your hand on your belly. Now breathe deep, and feel your belly move up in down. That is the right way to breathe. You are probably breathing up in your chest area, and that makes you more anxious. Now breathe slowly. Do a mantra in your head innnnnnnnnnn ouuuuuuuuuuut innnnnnnnnnnn ouuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut slowly breathing. This is how you calm yourself. Focus on whatever 2 words you want as you breathe slowly.
Look at an object, and observe everything about it for 5 minutes, then stretch that to 10, then 15 min as your gain experience. That’s a form of meditation.
Finally, are you catastrophising, always thinking of the WORST thing that could happen? Try to catch yourself doing this, then change your thinking to, what is the MOST LIKELY thing to happen – hardly ever is the worst going to happen. You can’t die of a panic attack, either.
Cognitive Behavioral therapy is the most effective kind of counseling. Try free computerized CBT at moodgym.anu.edu.au. Computerized therapy appears to be almost as effective as counseling, research shows.
All the best!!
